Together for Europe: Wiesbaden Municipality Celebrates Intercultural Youth Exchange with ARKA

WIESBADEN, GERMANY – The official website of the Municipality of Wiesbaden has featured a dedicated article recognizing the participation of young people from the ARKA Youth Center in Shkodra, Albania, in an international youth exchange held in Wiesbaden from July 28 to August 6, 2025.

Organized under the theme “Bring on the Good Life!” (“Her mit dem schönen Leben!”), the exchange brought together Albanian and German youth in a rich and immersive program of intercultural learning, political education, and social engagement. The initiative was part of a long-standing partnership between ARKA Youth Center and the Biebrich Youth and Community Center (JUZ Biebrich) and marked the return visit following a similar exchange in Shkodra in the summer of 2024.

At the heart of the program was Wiesbaden’s annual youth theme: “Social (In)Justice – Bring on the Good Life!” Participants explored questions of equity, opportunity, and social realities through creative workshops, group reflection, and dynamic discussions. A key element was the collaboration with Spiegelbild – Political Education from Wiesbaden e.V., through which youth examined the Jewish history of Wiesbaden and its modern-day significance.

In addition to the educational components, participants engaged in shared leisure activities that fostered intercultural bonds and team spirit – including climbing in the Neroberg forest park, visiting the Dialogue Museum in Frankfurt, and participating in a breakdance competition at the Schlachthof cultural center. Shared cooking sessions – including the preparation of an Albanian dish – and a group trip to Rüdesheim helped to further connect the two cultures.

A major highlight of the program was a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on August 4, where the young people discussed social justice in Europe and Albania’s EU integration process. The experience was complemented by a guided exploration of the historic city.

On August 5, the youth were received at Wiesbaden City Hall by Dr. Patricia Becher, Deputy Mayor for Social Affairs, Education, and Housing, who led them on a symbolic tour of the City Council chambers and the Mayor’s office. In a formal ceremony in the city’s Grand Hall, each participant was awarded the EU Youthpass, a certificate acknowledging their active involvement, learning achievements, and intercultural growth.

“Young people who meet across borders, listen to one another, and engage in meaningful dialogue about social justice are a powerful promise for democracy,” stated Dr. Becher. “These kinds of encounters deepen mutual understanding and show that Europe is more than just a political construct – it comes alive through the values of its younger generation.”

The exchange was jointly organized by JUZ Biebrich, Wiesbaden International (a division of the Department of Youth Work), and the ARKA Youth Center in Shkodra, and was co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Youth Program.

By highlighting this event on its official communication platform, the Municipality of Wiesbaden underlines the importance of youth mobility, intercultural learning, and European solidarity – showing how local initiatives can have international impact and long-term value for the youth of both communities.
